Fluid Flush

Decided to do some maintenance work on the car this weekend.  I really don't like not knowing when the last time something was done, so I thought I would change the oil and flush the radiator this weekend.

First up was the radiator.  The previous owner said it was flushed "maybe 10 years ago" and well that was enough for me want to change it.  Wasn't too bad.  Drained out the old, flushed the system, ran some water through the system to make sure everything was out of it, and then put in some new fluid.

Feeling good about this after seeing what it puked out

Next up was the oil.  So the previous owner was running straight 40 weight Valvoline racing oil.  The only problem with this was that it had ridiculously high oil pressure at start up and you had to wait for the engine to warm up to operating temp before you could really drive it.  Plus they really stopped making the straight 40 weight and it is hard to find at any store.

So I decided to go with 20w50 Valvoline VR1 racing oil.  It still has all the ZDDP necessary for these old pushrod engines and it also the right viscosity to properly oil the engine.  The added bonus is that now it has the 20w, so it should relieve some of that high oil pressure at startup.  We'll see if it helps.

Mmmmmmm......

Replaced the GM(!) filter with a genuine Motorcraft filter

Looking good.  Oil pressure right there in the middle,
and the radiator temp is a little high but good
